Join us for a fascinating lecture with Dr. Michael Chemers, acclaimed theatre scholar, author, and expert on the intersections of folklore, performance, and cultural history. Dr. Chemers is the founding director of the BFA in Dramaturgy Program at Carnegie Mellon University and currently serves as Professor of Dramatic Literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His published works include Ghost Light: An Introductory Handbook for Dramaturgy and The Monster in Theatre History: This Thing of Darkness, both of which are widely used in theatre and folklore studies. In this special talk, Dr. Chemers will guide us into the strange and terrifying world of Krampus—the horned, cloven-hooved companion of St. Nicholas. Rooted in Alpine traditions, Krampus is both a punisher of naughty children and a cultural icon whose legend has endured for centuries. Dr. Chemers will trace Krampus’s origins in European folklore, explore his evolution through literature, theatre, and popular culture, and explain why this shadowy figure continues to capture our imaginations today. Expect a lively, thought-provoking presentation that blends history, performance, and myth—perfect for anyone intrigued by the darker side of holiday traditions. https://www.monsterstudies.ucsc.edu/
