Hours of Operation
8am - 4pmAbout Us
Our self-directed model of learning is one which will be a lot more engaging to students' interests, but also requires significant individual motivation and discipline. For many kids these things take a while to develop, but they are critical to the long-term goal of preparing students to be successful rather than merely eligible for opportunities after high school.
What a week/month/semester looks like will be different for each student based on their individual goals, but could include the following:
Projects which students design based on their interests (with the support of an advisor)
-
Workshops, seminars, deep dives, crash courses, and flows which students sign up for online
-
Core SJUSD graduation requirements and college eligibility through co-designed learning plans and meeting of competencies
-
Learning Plans to focus student goals and responsibilities
-
Advisory (18-25 students and one adult advisor/teacher)
-
Internships and service learning projects
-
Flexibility for community college dual-credit courses
Some thoughts from one of our students on what it takes to be successful here:
-
You need a reason for being here (not running away from something else)
-
You need to want to manage procrastination (be self-aware and find structures/supports)
-
You need to develop a growth mindset (belief in your ability to do things)
-
You need to be responsible for your own learning (don’t wait to be told things)
